1971 MGB GT – Nightfire Red with Oatmeal Leather, Overdrive
Introduced in October 1965 and styled by the legendary Italian design house Pininfarina, the MGB GT remains one of Britain's most enduring and practical sporting classics. Often regarded as one of the world's first mass-produced sports hatchbacks, the GT combined the proven mechanical reliability of the MGB Roadster with elegant fastback styling, enhanced aerodynamics, generous luggage space and the versatility of occasional rear seating. We are always delighted to acquire exceptional MGB GTs, and when the owner of this beautifully presented example approached us, we were immediately interested. It quickly became apparent that this was far from an ordinary GT, but a cherished, thoughtfully improved example that has benefited from decades of enthusiastic ownership and meticulous maintenance.
Supplied new by Winfords of Bristol, the car remained with its first lady owner for approximately twenty years before passing to its second custodian in 2002. During his almost two decades of ownership, the car was maintained without compromise, with expenditure directed towards preserving and improving the car mechanically while sympathetically enhancing its appearance.
In 2008 the engine was professionally rebuilt by the renowned Bristol MG Workshop at a cost of approximately £2,000, ensuring the car continued to perform exactly as Abingdon intended. Additional upgrades include electronic ignition, an electric cooling fan and carefully considered suspension improvements, making the driving experience even more enjoyable and confidence inspiring in modern traffic while retaining the character that makes the MGB GT so appealing.
A visit to the Morgan factory in 2010 provided the inspiration for the car's most striking transformation. Captivated by one of Morgan's contemporary interior specifications, the owner embarked upon a comprehensive restoration that blended traditional craftsmanship with tasteful modern elegance. Extensive body restoration included replacement inner and outer sills, door skins and front wings before the car was refinished in stunning MG Rover Nightfire Red. The result is simply outstanding, with a deep, lustrous finish that perfectly complements the GT's timeless Pininfarina lines.
The interior is equally impressive, trimmed in luxurious Oatmeal Impala leather with contrasting red piping, complemented by matching red carpets, oatmeal door cards and headlining, a beautifully crafted walnut dashboard and a wood-rim sports steering wheel. Sitting on attractive Minilite-style alloy wheels, the overall presentation is both distinctive and sophisticated, creating a GT that feels every bit as special as it looks.
Today this MGB GT presents beautifully throughout and stands as a testament to the previous owner's vision, dedication and considerable investment. Accompanying the car is an extensive history file dating back to 1990, containing previous MOT certificates, numerous invoices documenting maintenance and restoration work, together with photographs recording its sympathetic transformation. The documentation provides reassuring evidence of continuous care and conscientious ownership over many decades.
