1973 Triumph GT6 – French Blue – Award-Winning, Documented Example
The Triumph GT6, often described as the “poor man’s E-Type,” was Triumph’s stylish six-cylinder fastback coupé, designed by Giovanni Michelotti and admired for its elegant looks and spirited 2.0-litre performance. Built between 1966 and 1973, it remains one of the most desirable sporting Triumphs of its era, especially in well-preserved and carefully restored form.
This fine example was first registered on 10th August 1973 and is presented in its striking original French Blue with black cord interior. Powered by the 1998cc straight-six engine and fitted with a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, it has had just three former keepers from new, its history clearly documented in the accompanying full V5 record. The car retains its spare keys and is further authenticated by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate.
The provenance of this GT6 is exceptional. Supplied with two large files of paperwork, the car comes with a Triumph service passport, original Triumph GT6 sales magazine, numerous MOT certificates verifying mileage over the years, and even the original bill of sale from 1976, when it was sold to Mr Wotherspoon with a detailed dealer inspection. It has been serviced regularly at Beaulieu Garage in the New Forest and is offered with countless bills and invoices recording its maintenance throughout its life. A £3000 restoration by Classic Restore was carried out in 2011, including a differential refurbishment, and the car was upgraded with electronic ignition for reliability. More recently, a new carpet set was fitted in 2022, further enhancing the cabin. Documentation of the restoration is included on CD, alongside a Haynes workshop manual.
Beyond its paperwork, this GT6 has enjoyed a past celebrated concours career, securing first prize at Breamore House in 2012, Best Classic Car (post-1960) at the Southern Motor Show in 2013, and Concours honours at the Poole Bay Classics Show in 2014, among other trophies.
Presented today as a beautiful, well-documented, and award-winning example, this Triumph GT6 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a model with strong provenance, careful restoration, and proven pedigree on the show field. A true collector’s car, ready to be admired and enjoyed.
