Austin Westminster A95 – Auto/Power Steering
In the autumn of 1956, the British Motor Corporation entered one of its most dynamic phases of evolution, unveiling a series of updates across its range. It was during this period that the Austin A95 Westminster emerged as the natural successor to the A90, carrying forward its sturdy charm while introducing refined engineering and a touch of post-war optimism. Though the chassis remained largely the same, the wheelbase was extended by two inches, and the 2.6-litre straight-six engine gained an additional 7bhp. The Borg-Warner automatic transmission – a costly and rare option at the time – represented the height of motoring sophistication for discerning buyers in 1957.
The example offered here is a truly exceptional and remarkably original Austin A95 Westminster, finished in elegant mid-grey with a white side flash, complemented by its original two-tone green leather interior. First registered in 1957, this Westminster has covered fewer than 46,000 miles from new and presents today as one of the finest surviving examples of its kind. Having led an exceptionally sheltered life, it spent long periods in dehumidified, heated storage between 1971–1988 and again from 1992–1996. More recently, during the 2020 lockdown period, it was again carefully stored, attending only a handful of shows.
Mechanically, the car benefits from a number of carefully considered enhancements designed to improve reliability and usability while maintaining originality. The rare Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, rebuilt just 4,000 miles ago at a cost of £4,000, operates beautifully. Adjustable electric power steering, servo-assisted brakes, and an adjustable Kenlowe fan with a hot-start system all contribute to a more refined and effortless driving experience. A Facet fuel pump with regulator and retrofitted screen washers have also been added for modern convenience.
Recent expenditure has included a replacement of the rear leaf springs, shackle plates, bushes and pins (circa £700), along with a rebuilt Smiths clock and the fitting of Hardura mats in the boot area, preserving the original mat beneath. A new battery, original tool roll including wheel brace and jack, and even period Austin cushions accompany the car. The history file is both extensive and fascinating. It includes multiple previous V5s, numerous MOT certificates dating back decades, photographs, and a detailed hand-written notebook documenting shows attended, mileage, and maintenance carried out. Of particular note, this Austin was featured in Classic & Sports Car’s 2021 Buyer’s Guide (pages 174 onwards) and was also celebrated as “Sadcase Car of the Month,” testament to its standing within the enthusiast community. Accompanying documentation includes a period Austin A90, A95 and A105 Service Manual, the July 1957 Automatic Transmission Supplement, two original sales brochures, and a comprehensive Austin Cars Parts Book—all of which underline the car’s authenticity and the care it has received throughout its life.
While it has been treated to a sympathetic respray to restore its period sheen, this Westminster has never been rebuilt, retaining its original character throughout. The engine bay has been carefully detailed to a show standard, presenting as clean and honest as the rest of the car.
Quietly confident yet eminently capable, the A95 Westminster remains a highly usable and comfortable classic. Its smooth straight-six engine—shared with the Austin-Healey—provides ample performance for touring or regular classic events. With excellent visibility, generous cabin space, and modernised driving aids, this example is ideal for long weekends, shows, or simply reliving the charm of 1950s British motoring.
Offered with a fresh MOT valid until September 2026 and a superbly curated history file, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most original and best-preserved Austin A95 Westminster's in existence.
