1983 Austin Ambassador 2.0HL Auto - Three Owners/54,000 Miles

The Austin Ambassador, introduced in 1982 as the final evolution of the British Leyland wedge saloon lineage, represented a refined and practical approach to executive motoring, combining hatchback versatility with the comfort and engineering familiarity of its predecessors. This 1983 Austin Ambassador HL 2.0 Automatic is an outstanding example of the model, presented in classic white coachwork over a distinctive Paprika interior, and showing a remarkably low 54,000 miles.

Equipped with the desirable 2.0-litre engine and smooth 3-speed automatic transmission, this HL specification car benefits from power-assisted steering and a factory tilt-and-slide sunroof, offering a relaxed and comfortable driving experience characteristic of the period. The vehicle retains a current MOT valid through July 2026, supported by an excellent and consistent MOT history, and has had just three previous owners, with the current custodian having cared for it over the past five years. Accompanying the car is a Heritage Certificate and a substantial history file documenting its life and ongoing maintenance.

Notably, this Ambassador was Ziebart rust-proofed from new, a highly desirable feature that has contributed to its preservation. It is further enhanced by a stainless steel exhaust system and has clearly benefited from long-term enthusiast ownership focused on usability and reliability rather than over-restoration. During the current ownership, an extensive programme of mechanical and period upgrades has been carried out. The wheels have been professionally powder coated and fitted with four new tyres, complemented by an uprated battery and alternator to ensure dependable electrical performance. Ignition components have also been renewed, including a new old stock model-specific distributor, coil, spark plugs, leads and points. The SU HIF44 carburettor has been fully refurbished by Burlen Ltd and subsequently needle-tuned by AC Dodd Tuning for optimal running characteristics. The engine and gearbox have both received full servicing, while the cooling system has been thoroughly refurbished with replacement thermostat housing, thermostat and hoses. Various seals and fluid systems throughout the vehicle have also been addressed to maintain integrity and reliability. The Hydragas suspension system has been carefully refurbished with four reconditioned displacers, alongside renewed rear bump straps, ensuring the car retains its characteristic ride quality. The power steering rack has been refurbished, and in a thoughtful modernisation, a bespoke electric power-assisted steering pump has been installed, replacing the original engine-driven unit for improved efficiency and reliability. Further enhancements include a remote SU fuel pump with inertia safety cut-off, a new fuel tank sender, replacement tailgate struts, and discreetly integrated front spot lamps recessed within the grille. Inside, a period-correct yet upgraded audio system features a new old stock Panasonic radio cassette player paired with a four-speaker setup, including rear speakers, offering improved sound quality while maintaining the car’s original aesthetic. Additional details such as new mudflaps, aerial, and careful paint correction work complete what is arguably one of the most comprehensively sorted and genuinely usable Austin Ambassadors available today. Detailed wiring diagrams for the bespoke upgrades are included, reflecting the meticulous approach taken throughout.

The result is a car that starts readily, drives exceptionally well, and delivers the comfort for which the model is known. While naturally it remains a presentable and honest example. The sunroof operates correctly in both tilt and slide functions, and overall the vehicle offers a rare opportunity to acquire a well-sorted, thoughtfully improved Ambassador that stands apart from typical examples.
