1968 Volvo Amazon 121S: 2 Door/Fast Road/Power Steering

The Volvo Amazon 121S is a motor car that perfectly captures an era when engineering integrity, understated style and genuine durability mattered above all else. Designed and produced by Volvo Cars from the 1950s through to 1970, the Amazon became a rally winner, a family favourite and, notably, the first production car to feature standard three-point safety belts. It earned a global reputation for robustness, safety and reliability, appealing equally to enthusiastic drivers and safety-conscious owners alike.

Registered on 6th November 1968, this beautifully presented Pearl White 121S two-door example is a superb representation of the marque’s enduring appeal. Powered by the famously durable 1800cc four-cylinder engine, these cars were never about outright speed; instead they offered immense torque, remarkable longevity and a delightfully smooth four-speed gearbox that rewards the keen driver. With just nine careful owners from new, this particular Amazon has clearly led a cherished life.

Milestones originally sold this car three years ago and we were delighted when the owner offered her back to us once more. Prior to our initial sale, the 121S had been in the hands of a professional engineer and Volvo specialist for approximately sixteen years. Maintained regardless of cost, the car benefited during his stewardship from thoughtful upgrades including an alternator conversion and brake improvements. Around eleven years ago he undertook a comprehensive restoration as his own personal project, completed to an exceptionally high standard. The true measure of any restoration is how it stands the test of time, and today this Amazon continues to present impressively well.

An independent engineer’s report compiled in February 2021 found no faults and concluded: “This is a strong driver with a good tight chassis and engine and gearbox are excellent. A very good example, very well maintained and restored.” When we sold the car in 2021, Milestones fitted Easysteer variable electric power steering, transforming the driving experience and making the car effortless to use in modern conditions. The subsequent owner enjoyed regular commutes through France, a testament to the Amazon’s grand touring capability and reliability.

After twelve months, a further £3,000 was invested in rebuilding the engine to a fast-road specification, enhancing performance while retaining the model’s trademark smoothness and torque-rich character. The most recent owner, who purchased the car from us in 2023, has continued to service and improve the vehicle meticulously. In 2024 alone, significant expenditure was undertaken to elevate the car even further. A complete Bilstein suspension kit supplied by Amazon Cars was fitted, including Bilstein dampers, polybushes, new progressive springs and anti-roll bars. All linkages were blasted and treated, and the suspension professionally set up. The brake system was comprehensively overhauled.

The twin SU carburettors were professionally refurbished, the cylinder head gas-flowed and reconditioned, and a 123 electronic ignition system with matching coil installed and tuned, complete with rolling road printout. The underside and cavities have been treated with Lanoguard for long-term protection. Invoices document expenditure well in excess of £5,000 in recent works alone, all supported by detailed bills.

The history file is extensive and reassuring, containing the original handbook, stamped service book, restoration photographs and Volvo dealer invoices dating back to the 1980s. It is rare to find an example with such continuity of care and documentation.

On the road, she is simply delightful. The harder she is driven, the better she feels, with a sense of solidity and communicative handling that many modern cars struggle to replicate, let alone a 55-year-old classic. The fast-road engine specification, combined with the upgraded suspension and power steering, creates a wonderfully usable classic that is equally at home on sweeping country roads or continental touring.

Milestones are proud to offer this exceptional Amazon once again. We strongly recommend early viewing to fully appreciate the quality, provenance and driving pleasure of this outstanding 1968 Volvo Amazon 121S.
