1961 Ford Zephyr Convertible 206E

First registered in 1961, this Ford Zephyr Convertible 206E represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest surviving examples of Ford’s flagship open-top saloon. Finished in a vivid lime green with elegant white wall tyres, it exudes all the charm and optimism of early 1960s British motoring.

Having had just seven previous owners, this Zephyr is remarkable for its originality and preservation. It is one of only a handful of cars known never to have received any structural welding, the underside remaining in perfect, untouched condition. The bodywork and paint gleam with period correctness, while the interior trim and convertible hood are described as being in excellent order, free from the wear that so often afflicts cars of this age.

Under the bonnet sits the smooth six-cylinder engine paired with the highly desirable Borg-Warner overdrive – a rare option that transforms the car’s touring capability and makes it an especially appealing collector’s piece today. The car has covered just over 55,000 miles, and in 2024 it benefited from a comprehensive service and maintenance programme totalling nearly £3,000. The same year, it received a full professional inspection and valuation, confirming its superb condition and authenticity.

Adding to its significance, this very Zephyr featured in a newspaper article marking the launch of the BBC’s new series on classic car histories, presented by former Classic Car Weekly journalist and Top Gear presenter Quentin Willson. The article, which included a period photograph, celebrated the car as an exemplar of Ford’s post-war engineering and enduring style.

Accompanying the car is an extensive history file, including numerous invoices, old bills of sale, a good MOT record, and the original registration booklet still bearing road tax stamps from its first year of issue in 1961. Also present are the original Ford Motor Company “Schedule of Maximum Charges” booklet and a Sunday Times Motor Manual – delightful period artefacts that complete the car’s history.

This 1961 Ford Zephyr Convertible 206E stands as a wonderfully preserved and beautifully presented example of Ford’s finest. Its exceptional originality, rare specification, and provenance make it a standout entry in any serious classic car collection.
