MGF Trophy 160 – Special Edition (2002)

Introduced as a performance-focused derivative of the acclaimed MGF range, the Trophy 160 stands today as one of MG’s most celebrated modern collectibles. Produced in limited numbers, the model showcased uprated handling, distinctive styling cues and a more powerful 160PS engine, cementing its place in contemporary MG history. This particular car was first registered on 31 January 2002, is finished in the highly desirable Trophy Yellow and presents as a superb opportunity for anyone seeking a well-preserved and well-documented car.

The car comes with a spare key and features an interior trimmed in a black leather and cloth combination, set off by the iconic flash of Trophy Yellow that runs through the centre console and door cards. A Pioneer CD player has been installed, complementing the cabin while preserving the car’s authentic feel. It retains its factory Hydragas interconnected suspension, an integral part of the MGF driving character, recently refreshed as part of substantial maintenance.

There is an unusually rich history file accompanying this Trophy 160. The documentation includes a comprehensive step-by-step servicing guide covering numerous routine maintenance areas, a detailed MOT and servicing chronology dating back to its first sale by Wrights of Sleaford in January 2002, and mileage entries recorded meticulously at each service. The ownership record is equally well presented, confirming five previous keepers prior to the most recent long-term custodian.

The car has attracted favourable attention in the MG community, including a charming article in Enjoying MG Magazine celebrating MGF ownership and a feature in the MG Owners Club in 2021, where cars of this specification were the subject of a three-page write-up. It is believed the car spent a period off the road in dry storage for approximately three years between 2009 and 2011, which may help explain its preserved condition.

The current owner, who acquired the car in 2021, has invested over £6,000 in careful improvements and maintenance. This includes a new aerial, new battery, replacement tyres, cambelt tensioner, water pump, re-gassed Hydragas displacers, and a new rear window, along with routine upkeep reflected across numerous MOT certificates and supporting invoices.

Presented today in its striking original colour, with strong provenance, documented history and thoughtful recent expenditure, this MGF Trophy 160 represents an absolute cracker of a car. Engaging to drive, increasingly sought after, and ready to be enjoyed, it will appeal to collectors and enthusiasts alike.
