1973 Triumph TR6 - Power Steering - CP Specification

The Triumph TR6 is one of the most recognisable and celebrated British sports cars of the post-war era. Introduced in January 1969, it represented the final evolution of the traditional Triumph roadster, combining proven chassis and running gear from the TR5 and TR250 with a dramatically restyled body by Karmann of Germany. Its distinctive “Kamm tail” design, muscular wheel arches and purposeful stance gave the TR6 a far more aggressive appearance, while its lively straight-six engine ensured a driving experience that could be thrilling, raw and immensely rewarding. Today, the TR6 is widely regarded as the last true classic British sports car and remains one of the most engaging open-top motoring experiences available.

This particular example was first registered on the 8th of March 1973 and is presented in an elegant blue exterior complemented by a black interior and black hood, a timeless and highly desirable colour combination. The car benefits from electric power steering, enhancing usability while preserving the character and feel expected from a proper period roadster. Built to CP specification, this is the sought-after 150 bhp variant that delivers the unmistakable soundtrack and performance for which the TR6 is famed.

Milestones Classics are highly selective when it comes to Triumph TR6 models, with many examples on the market suffering from poor past repairs, substandard panel fit and mechanical fatigue following decades of enthusiastic use. When this car was inspected for a long-standing customer, it immediately stood apart from the majority.

The Triumph underwent a comprehensive body-off restoration during 2007–2008, carried out by the highly respected Ricketts Restorations, with expenditure in excess of £30,000. The scope of work was extensive and addressed all known TR6 corrosion areas, including replacement of the front panel, front wings, doors sourced from a dry-state USA car, inner and outer rear wings, rear deck panel and boot floor. A new windscreen and frame were fitted before the car received a full respray in its original colour. At the same time, the interior was completely renewed with a new dash top, seats, door cards and leather trim, alongside a replacement wiring loom, lighting, switchgear, re-chromed bumpers, new radiator grille, sill mouldings and a new hood.

Mechanically, the car has been equally well cared for. A correct CP-specification 150 bhp engine was fitted in 2002, followed by a replacement gearbox in 2003, both carried out by the well-regarded specialists Cox & Buckles. Since this work, the car has covered approximately 12,000 miles. Accompanying the vehicle is a substantial history file containing MOT certificates and invoices dating back to 1979, together with more than one hundred photographs documenting the restoration process in detail.

On the road, the TR6 delivers exactly as hoped. The restoration has aged extremely well, with notably strong panel alignment and only minor cosmetic blemishes consistent with careful use and enjoyment. The car feels tight, responsive and characterful, offering a deeply engaging driving experience that modern classics often struggle to replicate. The straight-six engine provides an intoxicating soundtrack, perfectly suited to spirited country roads or relaxed continental touring.

Without question, this is one of the best sorted Triumph TR6 examples currently available. The combination of its CP specification, high-quality body-off restoration, extensive history and striking dark blue over black presentation makes it particularly appealing. The Triumph TR6 is rightly recognised as an icon of 1970s British motoring, and this outstanding example promises many years of enjoyment for its next custodian.
