1971 Morris Traveller - Three Previous Owners/Restored/Fully Documented
The Morris Minor is one of Britain’s best-loved classic cars, designed by Alec Issigonis and introduced in 1948 as a modern, compact family car for the post-war era. The Traveller estate version, introduced in 1953, became particularly distinctive thanks to its extended rear body and exposed ash timber frame, giving the car its unmistakable character and making it one of the most recognisable British classics of the period.
This 1971 Morris Traveller is a particularly interesting example, presented in white with a black interior. Registered in 1971, the car has three previous keepers recorded and comes with an impressive history file which documents its long-term ownership and restoration.
Known affectionately as ‘Bob’ by the Weight family, the Traveller was purchased by one owner in 1985 and remained with them for over 37 years. It was used regularly for several years before the owner was provided with a company car, at which point the Minor was placed into storage. In 1996, with the car needing to be brought back into use, West Horsley Motor Works carried out an overhaul of the engine and mechanical components to get the Traveller running properly again. The invoices for this work are retained within the history folder, along with the subsequent annual MOT certificates.
In 1998, the car underwent a comprehensive rebuild from the chassis upwards with the assistance of Auto Attractions in Dorking. This included rebuilding the wooden rear frame, an important part of any Traveller restoration, and the work is supported by invoices within the history file. Later that same year, the interior trim was completed, bringing the car back together as a usable and presentable Morris Traveller.
Further mechanical attention followed in 2019 when a respected MG specialist in Surrey carried out an overall mechanical service, bringing the car back to MOT standard. More recent maintenance has included a new fuel tank, sender unit, spark plugs and tyres in 2022, followed in 2023 by a new radiator, fuel pipe, fuel pump, track rod and bonnet stay prop.
The history file is particularly appealing, containing old V5 documents, invoices, MOT certificates and photographs showing the Traveller during its restoration. The original bill of sale is also present, adding another useful piece of provenance to the car’s story.
Today, this charming Morris Traveller represents a genuine long-term ownership example with a documented history, an extensive restoration record and plenty of evidence of the care and mechanical attention it has received over the years. With its traditional white exterior, black interior and distinctive timber Traveller rear body, ‘Bob’ is an excellent example of one of Britain’s most enduring and usable classic cars.
