1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Berlina TI - Rare Right Hand Drive/Rally History
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a model that holds an important place in the history of the Italian marque, combining elegant styling, engineering sophistication and sporting pedigree in a compact saloon. Introduced in 1954, the Giulietta helped establish Alfa Romeo's reputation for producing cars that offered genuine driving enjoyment alongside everyday usability. The Giulietta Berlina TI took this formula a step further, providing a more sporting interpretation of the practical four-door saloon. Today, these cars are increasingly appreciated for their character, rarity and connection to Alfa Romeo's rich competition heritage.
Presented here is a particularly interesting 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Berlina TI, a rare right-hand-drive example that retains its original factory engine and matching numbers. Beyond its appealing originality, this car benefits from a fascinating and well-documented history, including a notable association with Alfa Romeo specialist, racer and author Jon Dooley, together with genuine participation in the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique.
The car's early history records it as a Thomson & Taylor and Winchester demonstrator, originally registered as 8 ECG in 1961. In 2002, it passed to Alfaholics and Tom La Costa, at which point it acquired the registration it carries today. By 2003, the recorded owner was J. M. Dooley, and in 2008, following its associations with Scuderia del Portello GB, the car transferred to Jon Dooley. A copy of the relevant V5 remains in the history file, alongside further registration documentation that provides useful opportunities to trace its ownership through the years. The Alfa has had seven previous keepers, with a substantial amount of V5 history retained to help piece together its life.
One of the most significant chapters in the car's story came in 2013, when a FIVA Identity Card was issued, providing valuable formal documentation of its historic identity. The following year, it took part in the prestigious Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, entered as car number 295 and crewed by Jon Dooley and Donald Saunders, starting from Reims. Period photographs preserved in the history file show the Giulietta competing in snowy conditions, a wonderful record of its participation in this demanding historic event. The car finished in 250th position overall, securing a genuine place in the rally's history rather than simply carrying the appearance of a competition car.
Today, the Giulietta retains its original-looking character, with its historic rally associations still evident through the original stickers and period aluminium wheels. The four-spotlight arrangement has since been removed, allowing the car's competition past to remain visible without compromising its understated road-going appearance. It is not presently configured as a rally replica, but instead offers an appealing balance between originality, documented motorsport history and the charm of a well-presented Italian saloon.
More recently, attention has been directed towards maintaining and improving the car mechanically. In 2023, the braking system was completely rebuilt, while in 2025 the Alfa was serviced by marque specialist Peter Smart Classic Alfas. In 2026, it received a further mechanical inspection and service from respected Alfa Romeo specialist Alex Jupe Motorsport, with approximately £2,300 spent. Invoices covering the recorded servicing and maintenance, including work undertaken by Alex Jupe Motorsport in September 2026, accompany the car. The emphasis throughout has been on preservation and sympathetic improvement rather than unnecessary modification, an approach particularly appropriate for such an original and historically significant example.
The history file is a valuable part of the overall offering, containing the FIVA Identity Card, copies of previous registration documents, photographs of the car competing on the Monte-Carlo Historique and invoices relating to its maintenance. Some MOT history is also available, adding further reference points to its documented life.
For the enthusiast seeking something more individual than the usual classic saloon, this Giulietta Berlina TI offers a compelling combination of rare right-hand-drive specification, matching-numbers originality, specialist ownership connections and genuine historic rally participation. Its understated presentation makes it equally appealing as an engaging road car, while its documented past provides considerable interest for the dedicated Alfa Romeo enthusiast.
A distinctive and historically engaging Giulietta, offered with an excellent story to tell and a clear emphasis on retaining the character that makes these cars so special.
