1968 MGB GT - Ivor Searle Power-Tec Engine

Introduced in October 1965, the MGB GT brought a new dimension to the popular MGB sports car, combining its familiar sporting character with a practical fixed-roof body styled by Pininfarina. Its distinctive ‘greenhouse’ design, elegant proportions and versatile hatchback layout helped establish a template for the sporting coupés that followed. Today, the MGB GT remains one of Britain’s most recognisable classic cars, although finding an outstanding example that has been maintained and improved to such an exacting standard is becoming increasingly difficult.

First registered in 1968, this Snowberry White MGB GT, complemented by a black interior with red piping, is a particularly special example. Having previously been sold by Milestone Classics in 2019, we are delighted to welcome it back into our showroom, having reacquired it from the very person who purchased it from us all those years ago.

The car spent ten years in the ownership of a retired engineer who viewed numerous MGBs before finding one that met his exacting standards. Once acquired, he set about improving the car with considerable knowledge, care and investment, creating a GT that delivers a genuinely impressive driving experience. The quality of the work and the thought behind each improvement are evident throughout, making this a car that has clearly been maintained regardless of cost.

Under the bonnet sits a new Ivor Searle Power-Tec 1860cc balanced engine, complemented by a new Stage 2 cylinder head, a three-branch performance manifold and stainless-steel exhaust system. The gearbox and overdrive unit have been reconditioned by Heathrow Gearboxes, while the ignition system benefits from a 1-2-3 distributor, sports coil and Lumenition HT leads. A high-torque starter motor and Revotec electric radiator fan complete a number of carefully considered mechanical upgrades.

The chassis and suspension have received equally thorough attention, with front stub axles, rear springs, GAZ struts and polyurethane bushes all round. Uprated shock absorbers, a front anti-roll bar, Greenstuff brake pads and braided brake hoses further enhance the car's composure and stopping performance. Sitting proudly on stainless-steel chrome wire wheels, with additional alloy wheels also forming part of its specification, this is an MGB GT that has been developed with real purpose rather than simply dressed for appearance.

Inside, the cabin has benefited from an interior upgrade, retaining the classic character of the GT while introducing considered improvements for comfort and usability. The Webasto sunroof adds welcome light and ventilation, and subsequent expenditure by the owner who purchased the car from us in 2019 has continued to refine the details. These improvements include a new boot carpet, Moto-Lita steering wheel, gear knob, sunroof wind deflector, floor mats and sun visors. It is particularly pleasing to see that the standard of care established by the earlier owner has been continued.

The history file is a substantial part of this car's appeal. Containing invoices dating back to 1986, it documents the extensive maintenance and expenditure lavished upon the MG over many years. The car was rebuilt to an excellent standard in the early 1990s, and the accompanying paperwork provides a valuable record of its subsequent development. There is also a carefully typed and dated ownership history, together with a comprehensive record of work carried out since 1986, including MOT certificates, servicing details and associated costs. The invoices and supporting documentation offer a reassuring level of transparency rarely found in a classic of this age.

We travel the country viewing hundreds of classic cars, and every so often an example comes along that genuinely stands apart. This is one of the sharpest-driving MGB GTs we have had the pleasure of offering at Milestone Classics. Its appeal lies not simply in its appearance or impressive specification, but in the quality of the engineering, the depth of its history and the dedication of the enthusiasts who have cared for it.

Now back with Milestone Classics, this beautifully developed Snowberry White MGB GT represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a well-documented, carefully improved and exceptionally rewarding example of this enduring British classic. For the enthusiast seeking far more than an ordinary MGB GT, this is a car that deserves serious consideration.
