966 Ford Mustang – 289 V8 C4 Automatic – California Car – UK Registered

The Ford Mustang is an American automobile manufactured by Ford and first introduced on April 17, 1964. Credited with creating the "pony car" class, the Mustang became a cultural icon of the 1960s, combining affordability with performance and style. Its enduring appeal has made it one of the most recognisable names in motoring history.

This particular example was first registered on 1 January 1966 and delivered new in Sacramento, California, through Downtown Ford (formerly Burton Motors). It left the dealership with a barrel-carb 289 V8 mated to a C4 automatic gearbox, just as it presents today. The first owner, Mrs Hartley, kept the car for around a decade before it changed hands a number of times, though always remaining in California. Its last long-term keeper sadly fell into ill health, and the Mustang was laid up off the road. During this time it suffered some damage following an attempted theft, with various parts being removed.

In 2022 the car was sold by a Californian trader and brought across the Atlantic to the UK, where it was registered the following year. Communication between the current owner and its Californian seller has helped trace and confirm the car’s provenance. Purchased through Oakwood Classics in 2024, the car has since benefitted from a comprehensive restoration, carefully documented with invoices totalling over £13,000 alongside a full photographic record. The work has included countless hours of skilled labour, ensuring the car is now presented in fine order.

Finished in classic red paintwork, this Mustang comes supplied with its original 1966 user manual, a State of California registration certificate dated 2022, a UK V5C issued in 2023, and a spare key. The car’s restoration history, along with photographic evidence of its life from California through to the present day, adds further weight to its authenticity and collectability.

A fine opportunity to acquire a well-documented and freshly restored 289 V8 Mustang Fastback, representing one of the most desirable icons of the muscle car era.
