1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 – 37,350 Miles, Unrestored Time-Capsule

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the car that defined the hot hatchback. By the time the second generation arrived in 1984, it had matured into a more refined, capable, and desirable driver’s car without losing the spirit that made the original such an icon. Today, surviving Mk2 GTIs in untouched condition are a rare find – and this car represents one of the finest examples we have ever seen.

First registered on 30 September 1988 by ECTA Southend, this Alpine White GTI has had just four keepers in total. The first was a collector who covered little more than 10,000 miles in ten years. It later passed to a lady owner who cherished it until 2009, when it was purchased by the current enthusiast keeper at 32,000 miles. Since then, mileage has crept up to just over 37,000, with the car stored under cover in a heated garage, kept on a trickle charger, and reserved almost exclusively for shows. It has never been driven on wet roads and has continued to win awards.

What sets this car apart is its remarkable originality. The L90E Alpine White paint is entirely unrestored and free of corrosion, with all panels confirmed as factory-original. Period details such as the VAG-marked aerial, embossed dealer plates, and even the tiny rubber spoiler grommets are present and correct. It currently wears NOS Volkswagen Silverstone alloys, but the original 14-inch steels remain boxed and supplied with the car. The interior is virtually as new, with grey fabric seats, unmarked carpets and headlining, and a Blaupunkt radio cassette with rare Votex cassette holder. Even the boot retains its original first aid kit and warning triangle.

Mechanically, it is equally strong. Powered by Volkswagen’s 1,781cc 8-valve engine mated to the familiar five-speed gearbox with the iconic golf-ball gear knob, it starts on the button, idles smoothly and drives exactly as a period dealer demonstrator would. The vendor reports no knocks, rattles or smoke, with a clean and orderly engine bay showing all the right factory details, including the early wafer-thin scuttle cover. Recent work includes a cambelt and water pump change, with the MOT valid until September 2025 and no advisories recorded.

Documentation is extensive and includes the V5C in the vendor’s name, Volkswagen’s factory certificate of authenticity, original handbooks and wallet, a dealer-fit radio with spare, period magazine features, and a substantial history file.

This GTI is pure, original and correct are exceptionally hard to find. With its low mileage, concours-winning pedigree, and untouched character, this is a reference-quality example of one of Volkswagen’s most celebrated cars – and a rare opportunity for the collector seeking the very best.
