1966 Gilbern GT 1800 – Full restoration, compelling history

The Gilbern GT is a Welsh sports coupé manufactured by Gilbern Sports Cars (Components) Ltd between 1959 and 1967. As one of the very few cars to be built in Wales, the GT combined British engineering with a lightweight glassfibre body. By 1966, the Gilbern GT 1800 held the distinction of being the only sub-£1,000 Grand Tourer capable of exceeding 110 mph on the open market. Powered by MG’s proven B-Series engine and underpinned by robust MGB mechanicals, the Gilbern GT has become a celebrated rarity among collectors of British sporting cars.

This fine example, originally built in 1965 and registered in January 1966, presents an opportunity to acquire a piece of Welsh motoring heritage. First delivered to London, this GT has a rich and fully documented history.

The most recent chapter began in 2015, when the car was purchased from the Secretary of the Gilbern Owners Club. Since then, it has undergone a meticulous restoration, the product of over 250 hours of dedicated labour. Every stage of the work has been carried out to the highest standards, with the body, complete chassis, and underbody all rebuilt, re-gel coated, and seam-sealed.

Mechanically faithful to its MG underpinnings, the car features:

  • 1.8-litre B-Series engine with a modified cylinder head to run unleaded fuel

  • Approximately 105 BHP

  • 4-speed gearbox with overdrive

  • AVO suspension for improved ride and handling

The result is a usable and enjoyable 1960s GT, perfectly capable of touring while remaining true to its original specification.

Inside, the car has received a complete retrim, executed with craftsmanship befitting a classic of this standing. Period-correct parts have been sourced wherever possible, ensuring authenticity throughout.

Accompanying the car are two folders brimming with history, including:

  • Original documents from 1966

  • Registration books, log books, tax discs, and MOT certificates

  • Over 100 invoices detailing the restoration and maintenance

  • Photographs chronicling the rebuild

Summary:

  • 1965 build, registered January 1966

  • Ex-Gilbern Owners Club Secretary’s car

  • Full restoration with body, chassis, and underbody rebuilt
