1968 Volvo 123 GT - Rare Example/Low Ownership And Mileage

The Volvo Amazon 123 GT is one of the rarest and most desirable variants of Volvo's iconic Amazon range. Introduced during the late 1960s, the 123 GT combined the renowned durability and engineering excellence of the standard Amazon with a more sporting character, featuring enhanced performance, distinctive trim and a host of factory-fitted equipment that set it apart from its stablemates. Produced in limited numbers between 1967 and 1970, the model has become highly sought after by collectors, with surviving examples becoming increasingly scarce. Today, the 123 GT is recognised as one of Volvo's most charismatic sporting saloons and represents an important chapter in the marque's history.

First registered in August 1968, this exceptional Volvo Amazon 123 GT presents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire one of the approximately 1,500 examples manufactured, with it believed that only around 70 remain registered in the United Kingdom today. A genuine collector's motor car, it combines originality, documented history and enthusiast ownership with the unmistakable charm that has made the Amazon an enduring classic.

Having had just six previous owners from new, the car is accompanied by a history file that reflects years of careful stewardship. Included within the documentation is some original V5 history, the original Volvo instruction book, an original period Volvo 123 GT sales brochure detailing the model's impressive factory specification, together with a comprehensive collection of service invoices dating back to 2011. These invoices clearly demonstrate the considerable care and investment made during the ownership of Mr Coates, whose dedication to maintaining the car is evident throughout the history file.

Further enhancing its provenance, this Amazon was an active member of the Swedish Volvo Members Club and attended numerous classic vehicle events and shows throughout its ownership. Accompanying the vehicle are an extensive collection of club magazines, membership registers and a book dedicated to Volvo and its various models, all of which add to the car's historical appeal and collector interest.

The indicated mileage is approximately 45,000 miles, a figure we believe to be correct based upon the accompanying history and the fact that the vehicle spent many years laid up and off the road. The MOT carried out in August 2025 recorded the mileage at 44,319 miles, with the odometer now reading 45,181 miles, reflecting careful enjoyment since returning to regular use.

Mechanically, the Volvo continues to perform as it should. During 2025 it was entrusted to David Calderwood Restorations where it benefited from a full service, engine oil and filter change, together with the replacement of the exhaust front pipe. The car is currently MOT tested until August 2026 with no advisories recorded.

The 123 GT was distinguished from the standard Amazon by its impressive factory equipment, much of which is highlighted within the original sales brochure supplied with the vehicle. Features include the desirable dashboard-mounted rev counter, auxiliary driving lamps and numerous GT-specific appointments that helped establish the model as Volvo's sporting flagship of the period.

Tasteful upgrades have been discreetly incorporated to improve usability without detracting from the car's character. These include a digital classic-style radio, preserving the period appearance while offering modern convenience, together with an electric cooling fan to enhance reliability in modern traffic conditions. A useful package of spares is also included with the sale, providing additional reassurance for the next custodian.

With rarity, documented history, original literature, enthusiast ownership and a wonderful level of supporting documentation, this Volvo Amazon 123 GT represents an increasingly difficult model to source in today's classic car market. Whether destined for concours events, classic touring or to become the centrepiece of a discerning Volvo collection, it is a motor car that offers authenticity, provenance and immense charm in equal measure.

Viewing is strictly by appointment only.
