1979 MGB GT: Late/Lovely Driving Car with Overdrive

The MGB GT is a classic British sports hatchback produced by the MG division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later British Leyland, between 1965 and 1980. Designed by the renowned Italian styling house Pininfarina, the GT was introduced in October 1965 and combined the performance and handling of the MGB Roadster with a sleek, practical fastback body. Its aerodynamic design offered improved high-speed performance, with the closed coupe comfortably exceeding 100 mph, while the folding rear seats created a versatile luggage platform — a pioneering blend of style, sport, and practicality that made it one of the first true sports hatchbacks to enter mass production.

This particular MGB GT represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautifully sorted and well-presented example of one of Britain’s most beloved classics. Finished in a smart, straight body and complemented by its original black leather interior, the car benefits from being lowered to chrome bumper ride height, which not only enhances its stance but restores the balanced handling.

Previously enjoyed as a daily driver by one of its past owners and later as a first classic car by another, this GT has clearly been cared for and improved throughout its life. Mechanical recommissioning has been carried out to a high standard, including a comprehensive service, upgraded PowerSpark 45D distributor with Powermax rotor arm, Lucas Gold Sport coil, and refreshed fuel and water pumps. The car also benefits from a K&N air filter kit with heat shields, new clutch hydraulics, and lowered rear leaf springs with new bushes and bump stops. A full rolling road test and tune ensures that the engine performs exactly as it should, while a complete exhaust system and a set of five new Goodyear tyres contribute to confidence and reliability on the road.

The result is a thoroughly enjoyable MGB GT that starts, pulls cleanly through the rev range, and delivers the unmistakable exhaust note that has made these cars so enduringly popular. The interior retains its original charm while the overall presentation suggests careful ownership.

Used regularly and maintained with enthusiasm, this MGB GT is both a practical everyday classic and a rewarding weekend driver. Affordable to run and simple to maintain, it offers the perfect entry into classic car ownership, blending timeless Pininfarina styling with genuine usability.

A well-sorted and charming MGB GT — ready to drive, enjoy, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Viewing by appointment only.
