1957 Standard 8 - Restored/Four Previous Owners

Introduced in 1953, the Standard Eight was a compact four-door saloon produced by the British Standard Motor Company. Designed as an affordable and practical family car, it featured unitary construction and an overhead-valve engine, offering economical motoring in a neatly proportioned package. By 1957, the 803cc engine produced 30 bhp at 5,000 rpm, driving through a four-speed gearbox. The later Gold Star models benefited from welcome improvements, including an opening boot lid and wind-up windows, helping to make them a practical choice for everyday motoring.

Over 136,000 Standard Eights were produced, and today these charming little saloons offer a wonderful reminder of Britain's post-war motoring heritage.

First registered in 1957, this delightful Standard Eight Gold Star is finished in its original colour of black, complemented by a wonderfully period red and beige interior. With its classic lines, distinctive metal sun-visor and beautifully presented appearance, it captures the character and style of the 1950s to perfection.

The car underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2015, carried out by its third owner at a cost of over £7,000. The work included a professional, high-quality bare-metal respray in the original black, giving the bodywork a fresh and authentic finish. The restoration also saw the wheels powder-coated, five new tyres fitted, and new door hinges and handles installed. The bumpers were rechromed, while new carpets and door-edge trims refreshed the interior.

Considerable attention was also given to the mechanical and electrical systems. The brakes were overhauled, including the cylinders, shoes and copper brake pipes, and the car was rewired. The ignition system received replacement points, plugs, leads and distributor components, while an alternator conversion was carried out. The windscreen washers and wipers were also attended to, helping ensure this lovely Standard remains enjoyable to use.

On the road, the car drives beautifully, delivering the sort of authentic classic motoring experience that is increasingly difficult to find. It looks right, sounds right and has that unmistakable character of a genuine 1950s British saloon. With its compact dimensions, charming styling and engaging road manners, the Gold Star is a car that encourages you to slow down, enjoy the journey and appreciate motoring as it once was.

With four previous owners and still retaining its original registration number, this Standard comes with a small but useful history folder containing a copy of the original buff logbook, invoices and MOT certificates. This supporting history, together with the documented restoration, adds further interest to an already appealing example.

The car also has an interesting connection with the film and television world. During its time with us in 2023, at the time, Milestones were delighted to arrange its hire to a production company filming at Goodwood House, demonstrating the appeal of its authentic period appearance. Equally at home on the local classic-car show circuit, it is sure to attract admiring attention, friendly conversation and perhaps a few trophies along the way.

An ideal introduction to classic-car ownership, this beautifully restored Standard Eight Gold Star offers genuine period character, a fascinating history and the opportunity to own a distinctive piece of British motoring heritage. It is a charming survivor that deserves to be seen and appreciated.

Early viewing is strongly recommended to fully appreciate this delightful classic.
